By Frank

HTML5 Video

Over the last year we have been continuously tracking the rise of HTML5 compatible video across the web. This is the fourth installment in the series and we’ve got our latest results to share.

H.264 is currently the dominate native video format and continues to be broadly adopted.

Discoveries We Made

  • The growth as a percentage has further slowed since February but overall adoption is increasing.
  • H.264 continues to grow with the rise of modern browsers & the massive growth in mobile (mostly iOS & Android).
  • WebM currently accounts for < 2% of total videos in our index, however, this could change with YouTube recently announcing it was transcoding all of its index into WebM. – We’ll keep you updated.
  • Ogg Theora continues to grow but at a significantly slower pace.

Mobile Driven Video

Following the general trend, as with operating systems, mobile determines which video codecs are used with iOS & Android currently dominating (and growing). Since we have been tracking mobile video and HTML5 video, we have also seen the following mobile trends on mefeedia.com:

  • Android is the fastest growing (10X from Jan 2010 until June 2011).
  • iPad has the highest engagement, with 40% more videos viewed per visit than Android, iPhone, and desktop (Windows, Mac) environments.

New Trends

The main trend we are seeing is

  • App influence – The influence of apps is being felt, increasing desire for increased mobile multimedia on all platforms.
  • The growth of live – From FaceTime to Facebook Video Chat (not forgetting, the fantastic Ustream & Justin TVGamers check it out), live video is everywhere & only going to grow. Faster.

Our Methodology

We used MeFeedia’s video index for this analysis (around 30M videos from 30K video sites). Our final tally included only video that can be delivered within HTML5′s “video” tag. In the vast majority of cases, this means videos that were encoded in H.264.

Our Video Index

MeFeedia’s index encompasses videos from many sources (over 33,000 different sources). This includes a number of content partners such as Hulu, CBS & ABC as well as video from popular sites including YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion & more.
